Responding to Correction
Proverbs 15:31 says, “Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.” One of the means God uses to help us grow in wisdom is by using others to correct us when we are on the wrong path. So, it’s important to cultivate a right response to correction.
Often, when others correct us, we deny, deflect or outright get angry. By doing that, we resist the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In the very same chapter, Solomon tells us that “mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise” [Proverbs 15:12].
Let’s not resent the correction nor the one who corrects us! Let’s be humble and sincerely examine our lives to see if there is truth to what was said—even if the words were not expressed in a right manner. And where we need to change, let’s go to the Lord in sincere prayer and ask him to change us from the inside out. For apart from the Lord’s work in our lives, we cannot grow in wisdom.
