This is First World War poster. It comes pre-framed, and it has some degrading along the corners and sides, particularly the bottom left portion. There is also some slight wrinkling and yellowing of the paper its printed on. The majority of the item in question is intact and not damaged. The artist Edwin Howland Blashfield created the illustration in the center of the poster in 1919. The dimensions of the base poster are 17-3/8 x 31-1/2 .
This is meant as a certificate to show a military members posthumous, and post injury honor for valor and distinguished performance on the battlefield. According to the library of Congress’s website, this poster “shows Columbia holding a proclamation above her head in one hand while touching a sword to the shoulder of a World War I doughboy who kneels at her feet with the other hand. A large sized US flag flies behind her along with the faces of other soldiers.” It then goes on to say that they are inscribed with the name of the recipient.
