Stereoview photo of The Oratory at Fern Park in Old Orchard Beach, ME.

Photographed & Published by: A. J. Whittenmore, Rochester, N.H.

Fern Park (built in 1860’s) was a forested hillside park located near the former “Old Orchard House” that was filled with paths, arbors, rustic retreats decorated by cunning art and embellished with quaint conceits. The trees along the avenues had wooden tablets with verses from English and American poets. The Oratory, the Astronomer’s Seat, The Parson’s Lodge and the monument to Mr. Bull were about the most interesting objects. The area at the time was widely regarded as having no parallel in the country.

Date is likely 1870’s - 1880’s.

4.5” x 7”
Scarce Stereoview
Back is signed R.J. Pettengill, July 20, 1876

The right side image has what appears to be a defect that occurred during the photo making process and not any kind of damage that was done later. There is some minor corner ware and old age toning, writing on back and very light soiling.
