McCann’s first design for her Wingbacks was patented in 1947, although she submitted it in 1944. Improvements were granted to the patent in 1950 and 1952. The name Wingback comes from tiny metal wings” that slip in place to balance lightly over the curve of the ear. They look unlike any other earring mechanism on the market today, so they can be confusing when collectors of vintage first run across a pair.
