Pair of Traditional Russian Khokhloma Painted Lacquered Bowls

Pair of vintage matching footed bowls in black earth with multicolored hand painted designs. Inner has unusual revealed wood grain - larger has design at bottom. Larger about 5” tall, 6.5” diameter. Smaller 3.25” tall, 5” diameter. Very good condition from smoke free storage.

Khokhloma painting (хохломская роспись, hohlomskaya rospis) is a style of Russian art traditionally painted on wooden items. It is known for its curved linear features depicting vivid small flowers, berries, grasses, and leaf motifs. The process involves coating the wood with drying oil, applying powdered aluminum then painting with heat resistant oil paints and varnishing. When the varnish is heated in a kiln, it gives a yellow/gold tint to the works emulating a gold-like appearance.
