Born in Chicago in 1954. Her father was a first-generation immigrant from Mexico, and her mother was a Mexican-American born in the United States. She grew up in Chicago's Puerto Rican neighborhood. Her 1984 novel, Mango Street, Sometimes Goodbye, won numerous awards, and her 1991 short story collection, Blue Moon in San Antonio, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the National Endowment for the Arts Award, among others. In 2015, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama at the White House. She currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.
