The third and final Special Mint Set was produced in 1967 with an extremely low mintage of only 1,863,344 sets released. Special Mint sets were made due to rising silver costs. The coins in these sets were made out of coins composed out of a different clad composition made of copper sandwiched between two sections of nickel. Although not proof coins, they had a special finish applied to them giving them a unique sheen only seen on coins in special Mint sets.
The 1967 Special Mint Set featured 1 coin of each type released into circulation that year: the Lincoln Cent, Kennedy Half Dollar, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter and the Jefferson Nickel. Although struck at the San Francisco Mint, these coins bear no Mint mark. The Kennedy Half Dollar is unique in this set, in that it is composed out of 40% silver.
